Goldfinches Arrive At My Yard!

Male Goldfinch Male and Female Goldfinches
Several Goldfinch pairs were eating at the finch-feeder this weekend. It is the first time we saw a male Goldfinch. I didn't know what it was, but thanks to the internet I was able to get an identification. NOW I want to get a stronger telephoto lens! This is as close as I could get, so I'm going to put a pic I got off the internet into this blog so you can get a better look at them.

Surviving the Ice Storm

We survived the ice storm and are slowly getting back to normal. We were without power for 4 days. The next day after the ice storm we were to get a blizzard, but thankfully all the snow was just north of us.

Many tree branches snapped off because of the weight. With the power off it was VERY quiet at night and you could hear the snapping, cracking, and crashing all night. In the morning there were branches all over the yard. All over everybodies yards! We saw one tree totally split in half.

Joan said... @cindyzlogic Impressive ice storm! Very beautiful picture on your blog of the cardinal!

Spring Blizzard Heading for Kansas

Kansas is suppose to get a Spring blizzard tomorrow. They're predicting 6 or more inches. I guess I'll plan on making some homemade soup.

Cardinals Waiting For Spring

I took this picture of a female Cardinal this Winter. There are several pairs of Cardinals feeding at the feeder much to my delight. Today I saw a male Cardinal take a seed from the feeder and feed it to it's partner. I didn't have time to get the camera out. It was so cute!

Happy Spring! I took these pictures last Spring! A House Finch family made a nest in my Boston Fern. We observed this Finch family from nest building until this little one launched. I checked them each morning and took pictures. This little guy took off on his first flight shortly after I took his picture.

Birds Feeding on the Deck

I decided to purchase a birdfeeder that would attach to the deck. My purpose was to create an interesting, stress-free show for myself as I sipped coffe in the morning. This small decision evolved quite quickly into a hobby as I grabbed my point-and-shoot camera and started logging pictorially the different species attracted to the feeder. Next, I wanted to know what their names were, so to the internet I went. Not knowing what to Google caused me to remember that there was a list of bird names printed on the side of the birdfeed bag...ah-ha! I began Googling each name and started to discover exactly what I was looking at! Pure enjoyment!
The first picture is an American Cardinal and the other is a House Finch. Here are some links to learn more about the Cardinal and House Finch...
