Brown Thrashers

These Brown Thrashers came up to the feeder and I snatched these photos through the window screen. They didn't stay very long and I hope they'll come back. I have included a clearer picture, off the internet, of a Brown Thrasher.

I know this isn't the best photo in the world, but snatched it through the window screen. A pair of Brown Thrashers were eating below the feeder. They were very skittish, moving quickly.

Robin Nestwatchers: I checked the nest yesterday. Still 4 eggs. My husband and I went to work-out last night and they weren't sitting on the nest, nor when we got back...curious...kind of cool last night, too.

I just looked at the nest now...through binoculars from the picture window. The male is sitting on nest...he is sure a good sitter.

Mourning Dove Today

She was just sitting on the deck this morning. Perhaps waiting for the feeder. I hadn't put the feeder out yet. In the afternoon, I saw a couple of Doves walking toward the feeder, they like to forage beneath.

Robin Nestwatch: More Eggs Each Day!

On Friday, April 17th, there were 3 eggs, then on Saturday afternoon we checked and there were 4. We've been busy today so we have not checked the nest. When we returned home from Bible study, it was dark and cool out and she/he were not sitting on the nest. The old addage "a watch-pot never boils" popped into my head. We'll need to trust that they'll get back on the nest tonight and keep those eggs warm! I'll check out the nest tomorrow morning. I wonder how many eggs this couple is going to lay?

I was so pleased to be able to acquire a picture of the male Robin sitting on the nest. He allowed me to walk up pretty close to get these pictures. The female on the other hand is pretty skittish. As soon as we open the front door, she takes off.

This nest was built by a Robin couple in a little tree in my front yard. Checked it yesterday...and we've got eggs! The color is so rich and beautiful.

Story Behind this Baby

Last Spring I hung a Boston Fern out on the front porch area. A pair of House Finches quickly built a nest in it much to my surprise. We got a hard freeze which killed most of the fern. We took the plant down to throw it away, but there were a couple of eggs in the nest. We decided to keep the plant hanging in a less prominent spot, wait until all threat of cold weather passed, and then buy a new Fern. I looked in the nest every couple of days. The next time we looked into the nest it had about 6 eggs!

The Housefinch couple were good parents! They hatched three babies. The babies were so ugly, they were cute...ha ha!

And then there were two...the babies grew quickly and grew feathers on their wings. One morning I looked into the nest and there were only two babies. Of course, that was kind of sad because as the weeks passed we became attached to them.

Nesting Robin

A Robin is nesting in a little tree in our front yard. One nested there last year but the nest was very small. I'm going to track her progress through pictures and post them. Last year I tracked the progress of some Housefinches. That was fun! They nested in our Boston Fern. We got really attached : )

Mockingbird Sighting!

I finally got a picture of the Mockingbird! I love their song (medleys) when they arrive in early spring. We started to hear their song in late March. After Spring I don't hear their song. I do see them in the summer, but they don't sing their medleys. I suppose their song must have something to do with mating.

Their song is the first thing I hear in the morning. It just makes me laugh because they seem to be saying..."oh yeah! you think thats good...listen to this!" They change their song every 2-3 seconds...and I won't hear the same song after listening to them for 1 minute! It's just amazing! These gals are so beautiful I just had to post their pictures! I saw a huge Monarch butterfly this morning. I'm going to try and get a picture. I didn't realize they migrated this early.

Goldfinches Arrive At My Yard!

Several Goldfinch pairs were eating at the finch-feeder this weekend. It is the first time we saw a male Goldfinch. I didn't know what it was, but thanks to the internet I was able to get an identification. NOW I want to get a stronger telephoto lens! This is as close as I could get, so I'm going to put a pic I got off the internet into this blog so you can get a better look at them.

Surviving the Ice Storm

We survived the ice storm and are slowly getting back to normal. We were without power for 4 days. The next day after the ice storm we were to get a blizzard, but thankfully all the snow was just north of us.

Many tree branches snapped off because of the weight. With the power off it was VERY quiet at night and you could hear the snapping, cracking, and crashing all night. In the morning there were branches all over the yard. All over everybodies yards! We saw one tree totally split in half.

Spring Blizzard Heading for Kansas

Kansas is suppose to get a Spring blizzard tomorrow. They're predicting 6 or more inches. I guess I'll plan on making some homemade soup.

Cardinals Waiting For Spring

I took this picture of a female Cardinal this Winter. There are several pairs of Cardinals feeding at the feeder much to my delight. Today I saw a male Cardinal take a seed from the feeder and feed it to it's partner. I didn't have time to get the camera out. It was so cute!

Happy Spring! I took these pictures last Spring! A House Finch family made a nest in my Boston Fern. We observed this Finch family from nest building until this little one launched. I checked them each morning and took pictures. This little guy took off on his first flight shortly after I took his picture.
